Southsea, which got its name from the 16th century Southsea Castle, became a fashionable destination for bathing and other seaside leisure activities in the early 19th century. Today, it remains a vibrant, traditional resort town with plenty of visitor attractions.
Southsea beach stretches from Old Portsmouth to Easthey. The beach itself is made up mainly of flinty shingle, although a stretch of sand is exposed at low tide.

Victorious Festival returns on the August Bank Holiday weekend, bigger and better than ever before.
Following on from its successful debut last year, the Friday night opening party returns for 2018, and will this year see more of the festival site opened up. The first tranche of acts has been announced, with indie rabble rousers The Libertines headlining. Also scheduled for the Friday bash are Kaiser Chiefs, Shed Seven and Lightning Seeds – with more big names set to follow.
Love Southsea’s street market in Palmerston Road takes place every first weekend of the month.
The markets – which are now in their fifth year – always feature an excitingly diverse range of traders, creatives, and street food stalls, tied together with a friendly community atmosphere and led by Love Southsea’s ‘keep the pound in Pompey’ ethos!
